Who is stronger, graphite vs metal bipolar plate?

Bipolar plates are key components of hydrogen fuel cells, which not only provide channels for hydrogen and oxygen, but also block these two gases and establish a current path between the anode and cathode. Therefore, bipolar plates need to have high mechanical strength and excellent gas barrier performance. In order to reduce the conduction resistance of current and heat, the thickness of the bipolar plate should be as thin as possible.

Advantages of metal bipolar plates

Metal bipolar plates provide powerful power for automotive applications due to their excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, high strength, density, and good gas barrier properties. However, the corrosion resistance of metal bipolar plates is poor, especially during the operation of hydrogen fuel cells. The generated water is weakly acidic, which may cause the oxide film on the side of the metal bipolar plate to thicken, thereby reducing the battery performance. Therefore, the surface coating of metal bipolar plates is crucial, and at the same time, the tolerance accuracy and consistency of channel forming also have extremely high requirements for precision.

Characteristics of graphite bipolar plate

Graphite bipolar plates are known for their strong corrosion resistance and excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, but their airtightness is slightly inferior compared to metal bipolar plates. The processing cost of graphite bipolar plates is high, the processing cycle is long, and graphitization needs to be carried out in a graphitization furnace. After cutting and grinding, graphite plates with a thickness of 2-5mm are made, and then the required flow field is machined. Due to the brittleness of graphite bipolar plates, there will be some difficulty in the assembly process, and the thickness cannot be too thin.

Overall, the manufacturing angle, gas barrier, and durability of graphite bipolar plates are not as good as those of metal bipolar plates, but their corrosion resistance is better than that of metal bipolar plates. Graphitization takes a long time, machining is complex, and the preparation process is time-consuming and costly. Nevertheless, graphite bipolar plates exhibit excellent corrosion resistance.
